Lyttelton (in Maori Te Whaka Raupo) is a port city in the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand named after George Lyttelton, a British aristocrat and politician. With Christchurch, Lyttelton thanks to its proximity to Ross Island has been an important logistics hub for the Commonwealth expeditions to Antarctica. The city is located on the slopes of the Port Hills, which form the northern part of the port and effectively separate Lyttelton from the city of Christchurch, connected by the single-track railway gallery (opening 1867), a two-lane road gallery (opened 1964) and two roads on the Port hills.
