Nieuw Amsterdam: discover the ship
Built by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri of Marghera in Venice on July 4, 2010, the 86,000-ton Nieuw Amsterdam celebrates the charm and history of New York City, once called Nieuw Amsterdam, with its inspired design and art collections.
Holland America Line has installed a series of works worth over $3 million, ranging from the antiques of traditional Dutch masters to creations by famous contemporary artists. Some pieces belong to the Dutch Golden Age, while others, such as the spectacular fulcrum in the atrium, express a contemporary curiosity. Adorning the ceiling of Nieuw Amsterdam is a captivating abstract sculpture of the inverted New York skyline based on clear translucent blocks that hang upside down. The sculpture was created by the husband and wife artists Gilbert Lebigre and Corinne Roger.
The significant collection, which includes works by famous artists Andy Warhol, Richard Estes and Roy Lichtenstein, continues with stunning displays throughout the ship.
It is also possible to take an iPod ® self-guided art tour for guests who wish to view the entire collection. The iPod art tour is also available for free download at www.hollandamerica.com and on iTunes ®. Nieuw Amsterdam expands Holland America with new concepts, such as the innovative pan-Asian Tamarind restaurant and Den silk lounge surrounded by panoramic views of the ocean and the Lido pool. Other additions are an explorer's bar lounge, an award-winning tasting lounge, an elegant luxury jewelry boutique, a new atrium bar area, strengthened and reconfigured the Showroom at sea, and a new photo and imaging center. Then a cyber-cafe sponsored by The New York Times, the Pinnacle Grill and Pinnacle Bar, the innovative Culinary Arts Center presented by Food & Wine magazine, where culinary experts provide cooking demonstrations and intimate courses in view, a Spa and Salon with thermal suites and hydro-pool, the largest gym ever built for Holland America Line. Nieuw Amsterdam has 11 guest decks and all Signature of Excellence ® cabins with premium services.

Nieuw Amsterdam: the story
The first Nieuw Amsterdam was launched in 1906 and used both a full set of sails and steam engines. It was 17,149 tons and could accommodate 2,886. It sailed in regular service through the First World War and then until 1932. The famous Nieuw Amsterdam II joined the fleet in 1938 as the company's flagship. The silhouette of this ship is still visible today in the company logo. At 36,287 tons, "the Treasure of the Dutch," as it was called, was furnished in grand style and was inaugurated by Her Majesty Queen of the Netherlands Wilhemina.
Nieuw Amsterdam served with pride in the Second World War completing 44 wartime voyages which transported approximately 400,000 passengers (mostly troops). After the war it was rebuilt and hosted numerous famous people among its guests, including Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Spencer Tracey and Albert Schweitzer. Nieuw Amsterdam III was launched in 1983 as one of the most elegant ships of its time. At 33,900 tons, Nieuw Amsterdam III sailed in Alaska in the summers and the Caribbean in the winters.
With innovative design offerings, Nieuw Amsterdam IV continues the proud tradition of its name and the evolution of the sophisticated ships of Holland America Line.
