An important commercial center in the Persian Gulf, Al Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions by the ruling dynasties of Saudi Arabia and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation during the 19th century after a British hegemony. In a historic building, located in the customs square towards the old central business district of the city, is Bab Al Bahrain. Not far away is its National Museum, the largest as well as one of the oldest public museums built near Al King Faisal Highway. The country attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world, with just under a third of the population coming from other countries, alcohol is legal, with bars and nightclubs operating in almost all parts of the city.
